Overview Muscat is the capital and largest city in the Sultanate of Oman. It is also one of the oldest cities. Muscat, like much of the area is heavily dependent on trade. While oil is again a dominant market so are some of the traditional exports such as mother of pearl, frankincense and dates. The port is of major importance to the entire region. All infrastructural facilities are owned by the Government. Even though it is on the edge of the Arabian Peninsula the city is remarkably green with a number of large parks and city gardens.
Population The estimated population in 2005 was in excess of 600,000. Approximately 60% of the local population are Omani’s. It also has a sizeable expatriate population in both skilled and unskilled workers. Most of the population follow the only recognised religion in the Sultanate which is Islam. However, Oman does allow non-Muslims to practice their religion although it may not be promoted. Language The official language of the state is Arabic. Swahili, English, Hindi and Malayalam are widely spoken. Currency and Banking The currency for Oman is the Omani Rial. There are a number of national and international banks represented with ready ATM access available throughout the city. Climate Temperatures range from 13.5 degrees in winter to 35 degrees in summer and is very humid. Culture Muscat and the Sultanate of Oman reveal a land of friendly people and dramatic landscapes. In many ways it is very traditional it has been said that it is more outward looking than it is given credit for. As the region continues to develop change will be on-going. Life is relaxed and enjoyable. The cost of living is relatively low.
